When Walt Disney World began its 50th anniversary celebration last October, it did so with great new entertainment options at most Disney World parks. Most of these new issues, like Harmonious at Epcot and Enchantment in the Magic Kingdomshould last for at least the 18 month anniversary, if not continue after, but one of the new shows, KiteTails at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, is having its show end much sooner, although fans of the kites won’t tell you don’t worry because they don’t go away completely.
Today, Blog Mickey reports that the last performance of KiteTails will take place on May 26th. After that date, the huge kites, which resemble various Disney animal characters like Simba and Baloo, will no longer be part of a scheduled show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Instead, kites will be pulled all over the Discovery River lagoon, not just in front of the Discovery River Theater. And this will also happen without a fixed schedule, with kites appearing more often, but for shorter periods.
The KiteTails show garnered some laughs when it first appeared in October. The massive kites being pulled around the water by the cast members on jet skis were good enough on their own. But at the end of the show, the kites crashed into an unused part of the theater seats, which, although intentional, still looked like something had gone horribly wrong. Whether it was the wildly weird ending or the impressive kites themselves, many Disney World guests found the show to be at least charming, even if it fell short of most. shows in other parks.
For fans who enjoyed the show, this new way of seeing KiteTails is honestly probably the best way to do it. The kites are truly awe-inspiring to look at and that way anyone can see them walking near the water at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And they don’t need to take real time out of their normal day to see it.
Non-scheduled ambient entertainment is becoming increasingly important at Disney theme parks. It really moved with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and then it was taken to a new level at Disney California Adventure’s Avengers Campus. In these places, the characters do not stand in one place waiting to take pictures with guests. They walk around their respective lands simply existing, interacting with guests and with each other. You never know when you’ll meet them or who you might meet.
the the global pandemic then changed a lot at Disney World and increased that kind of character interaction out of necessity. Since the characters and guests couldn’t get too close to each other, the characters were found in the parks simply existing in places where the guests couldn’t go. This new version of KiteTails is essentially that. It will just exist and happen around you. It’s really cool. It makes theme parks livelier when this type of entertainment is right there.
If you want to attend the traditional performance of KiteTails, you can until May 26th. Now maybe we can see about Disney Animal Kingdom finally replaces Rivers of Light.
